FAQs • Mammoth Mountain was founded 50 years ago by Dave McCoy. Although Dave stopped skiing a few years ago (at 87), he and the McCoy family still have a huge and important presence in Mammoth. • Mammoth gets over 300 days of sunshine a year and averages 300 to 600 inches of snow each season. • Opening day this year was October 21st, when a storm dumped four feet in one day. • The whipped cream incident did not happen at the main event last year, and we will never admit it if it did. • Mammoth was open (freaky good spring skiing) until mid-June last year and typically has one of the longest seasons in North America. • A traffic jam in Mammoth is two vehicles in front of you at the stop light, or a family of five in the lift line. • Intrawest (Whistler and 17 other resorts in North America and Europe) owns 60% of Mammoth Mountain Ski Area and is pouring over 1 billion into the Village and other developments in Mammoth Lakes. • Under the letter T: there are four taxidermists and one taxi service listed in the Mammoth Lakes phone directory. • Altitude sickness affects one in five visitors to Mammoth and usually subsides after 24 hrs. Stay hydrated! (vodka doesn’t count) • Snow chains are required by law lessons on how (and on which wheels) to put them on should also be mandatory. • Learning to snowboard hurts your ego as much as your butt. • Snowboarding on virgin powder makes up for every ache and pain ever felt. • The top of Mammoth Mountain is 11,053’, 2,999’ above the Village. • Yosemite is just behind the Minaret Mountains when viewed from any of the lifts or top of the gondola. • The Village gondola currently stops at Canyon lodge and will eventually carry to the top of the mountain. • .The ski back trail from main lodge to the new Village is expected to be completed within the next two years • The airport expansion and regular jet service will occur… one of these days (currently the FAA is completing a secondary environmental report) • Hummers in Mammoth actually get used off road. • There are over a dozen natural hot springs located in the valley by the airport (10 mins from town). These range from 2 to 4 person tubs to a big pond which has held over 75 people and 13 dogs with room to spare. In heavy snow you have to walk to the tubs worth the trip but not for the faint of heart. • Local’s rule of thumb the lowlanders (LA/San Diego) turn off their brains at Mojave. • Visitor’s rule of thumb some of the locals have been here waaaaaay too long. • Californians drive 3,000 to 5,000lb vehicles over 300 miles to Mammoth but cannot figure out how to merge in a lift line. • Woolly, the Mammoth mascot, is a“She”
